AI Literacy in the Language Classroom

I just can't believe it but it's on its way, it's coming! Our very own book that we wrote together with my amazing colleague and friend, Zsofia Menyhei!

AI Literacy in the Language Classroom is the language teacher’s go-to guide for understanding how AI tools can make a real difference in the classroom. It shows teachers and students how to use AI tools to support learning in practical, meaningful ways. This book walks teachers through:

  • What AI is

  • How it works behind the scenes

  • Why it is so valuable for students today and in the future

  • How teachers can bring it into their lessons

  • Engaging, ready-to-use classroom activities

  • Tips for growing as a teacher in the age of AI

From the author - Zsófi

During my university years as a TEFL and Communication Studies major I found it fascinating to learn about emerging technologies, and how they shape and influence society. When I became an EFL teacher, and later a teacher trainer, I was more interested in the practical aspects. I was always on the hunt for educational technologies that could help me do my job more efficiently and creatively, and help my students achieve their goals. When generative AI technologies entered the scene, I got to explore exciting new ‘tools’, but it also became clear that GenAI is fundamentally different from the technologies that I had worked with before, and that it would change quite a few things in education and society as a whole. My colleague, Jo and I decided to introduce a focus on AI literacy in our teacher training courses, and participant feedback has reassured us just how important this endeavour really is.

For as long as I can remember, I have been eagerly tinkering with computer software. I have always been interested in how computers can be utilized in everyday life, so it came naturally that during and after finishing my teacher training degrees, I got actively involved in online teaching, teacher training, and digital materials development. When generative AI technologies emerged, I immediately felt that this is something that will potentially revolutionize education if we approach it in the right way. With my colleague, Zsofi , we instantly felt the importance of adjusting our syllabi to include a stronger focus on AI literacy. We believe that embracing GenAI technologies in teaching is the way forward in this new age.

Contents

Part A kicks off by defining the basics of AI. It explains how it has become such a big part of our daily lives, the different types of AI, and how they work. Teachers will see how AI tools are being used in the real world and pick up some solid advice for teaching AI literacy in their classroom.

Part B has five chapters of activities for teaching AI literacy. These cover all teachers need to know about AI, from getting started with basic tools and understanding the risks, to using AI for personalised and creative learning.

Part C is divided into two sections. The first describes some common challenges that teachers may face when teaching AI literacy, offering reflective tasks to help them tackle these issues while also building their confidence in teaching AI literacy. The second gives a behind-the-scenes look at how the authors have used AI tools to write the book, including examples of how the human and AI sides have teamed up to design some of the sections and activities.
